Biografia

La storia dei Queen inizia nel 1970, quando Freddie Mercury incontra Roger Taylor e Brian May, formando un gruppo rock, in seguito si unirà anche John Deacon. Incominciano a provare le prime canzoni. I loro primi pezzi musicali vengono registrati negli studi di registrazione De Lane Lea Studios a Wembley.

Il primo live della loro carriera è "Queen live killers". Nel 1973 esce il primo album del gruppo, dal titolo "Queen"; tra le canzoni incise ci sono "Keep yourself alive" e "Doing it right". Nel 1974 viene pubblicato il secondo album dal titolo "Queen II". Attraverso i primi album e le frequenti esibizioni il gruppo incomincia a farsi conoscere, la loro popolarità cresce anche per merito della bravura dei vari componenti che suonano in modo magistrale i loro strumenti, ma anche la personalità del leader del gruppo, Freddie Mercury, attira l'attenzione con la sua personalità stravagante e per il saper essere un vero show-man. Da lì in seguito la loro produzione discografica avrà sempre successo in tutto il mondo arrivando ai primi posti in classifica delle hit-parade.

Alcuni dei dischi più famosi degli anni '70 sono "A night at the opera", "The game" (molto particolare in quanto più orientato alla musica elettronica e dance, e contenente singoli quali "Another one bite", la più venduta in America del tempo, "Save me", "Crazy little thing called love" e "Play the game") e "Flash gordon", dove sono inserite alcune delle canzoni diventate famose ("Somebody to love", le leggendaria "We will rock you" e "We are the champions"). Nel 1981 esce la prima "Greatest hits" del gruppo, e nel 1982 il disco "Hot space" (la cui canzone "Under pressure" è eseguita in collaborazione con Davie Bowie), seguito da un tour mondiale. Le varie canzoni vengono accompagnate anche con video musicali, che diventano ogni anno sempre più sofisticati e perfezionati rendendo la musica dei Queen ancora più bella. L'album "A kind of magic", contenente singoli quali la title-track, "Who wants to live forever" e "One vision", diventa la numero uno in ben trentanove Paesi, malgrado, o forse grazie anche a, la rivelazione da parte di una rivista dell'omosessualità di Freddy Mercury, e precede il tour "Live magic".

Tra gli anni '70 e '80 è un susseguirsi di successi, esibizioni e produzioni, collaborando alle colonne sonore di film quali "Flash gordon" (con l'omonima canzone) e "Highlander" (con diverse canzoni dell'album "A kind of magic"). Tra il 1986 e l''89 producono molti altri successi, tra cui "The miracle", "Radio ga ga", "The invisible man", "It's hard life", la famossissima "I want to break free", e molte altre. Sono numerosi anche i tour condotti nel mondo dalla band in quegli anni; i più importanti sono "The works tour 1984" (celebrazione del decimo album del gruppo, "The works"), "Live aid 1985", "Rock in Rio 1985" e "The magic tour 1986".

Freddie Mercury, pur continuando il suo lavoro con i Queen, si separa momentaneamente dal gruppo per produrre dischi da solista, esibizioni e video-clip, ottenendo ulteriore successo. Tra i molti successi da solista spiccano "Living on my own", "The great pretender" e "Time". Mercuy si cimenta anche con la lirica, che amava, producendo insieme a una cantante lirica come Montserrat Gaballé l'album "Barcellona", uscito nel 1987 e meritorio di un successo mondiale.

Nel 1989 esce "The miracle", un altro successo con la title-track e "Hammer to fall". Nel 1991 è la volta di "Innuendo", di cui si ricorda "The show must go on"; questo album mostra un ulteriore cambiamento del modo di fare musica dei Queen, avente ora un altro tipo di sonorità e melodia. In verità questo album nasce in un periodo difficile per il gruppo e soprattutto per il suo leader Mercury, che un anno dopo morirà nella sua casa, il 24 novembre 1991, a causa dell'AIDS, malattia dichiarata solo pochissimi giorni prima. Con lui finisce, sostanzialmente, la vita dei Queen, lasciando un grande vuoto tra i fan e nella musica mondiale. La voce di Freddy Mercury è stata definita la più bella voce della musica.

La storia dei Queen si conclude con una serie di altre incisioni fatte dai rimanenti componenti della band, tutte a fini di beneficenza per la ricerca sull'AIDS: una seconda (e poi una terza) "Greatest hits", seguita da un concerto oceanico ricco di ospiti quali i Metallica, Def Leppard, i Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton, David Bowie e Zucchero, "Queen live at Wembley", "Queen rocks" (con le canzoni più heavy della band) e "Made in Heaven", una raccolta di canzoni (tra cui la famossissima "Let me live") eseguite da Freddy Mercury quando già sapeva di essere malato, rimasta incompleta e completata dal resto del gruppo.
